Refuge of Light has 3 main programs from our mission statement:

REFUGE SAFE HOME (HOLISTIC CARE) The first is our specialized residential safe home for female youth 18-21 years of age who have been sexually exploited. This is a place where the girls are safe and loved and can be guided towards a path of healing and restoration. (Read more below)

BRAVE GIRL/BRAVE HEART MENTORING PROGRAMS (ADVOCACY) The second is our ‘Brave Girl’ and Brave Heart non-residential mentoring programs for young girls and boys who are at a high risk for sex trafficking in East Texas. (Read more below)

TRAFFICK SIGNALS TRAINING (AWARENESS) The third is our ‘Traffick Signals Training’ which provides education and awareness for teachers, community leaders and parents who are all crucial allies in our fight. It is also a required class for all volunteers and employees. (Read more below)

Refuge of Light is a faith-based organization committed to providing a safe space for young females aging out of the foster care system. The home can house up to 6 residents in a shared housing setting. Each bedroom has a private bath and keyed locking door. The program is designed to serve female youth with a history of, or who are at risk of becoming victims of commercial sexual exploitation.

The goal of the program is to promote complete independence while providing a strong support system along the way. Refuge of Light seeks to give each resident hope for a brilliant and successful future! Please continue to pray as we minister and walk alongside the girls in the safe home.

A few important requirements: 

• A firm commitment to follow the Program Guidelines listed in the ROL Intake Packet 
• No drug, alcohol or tobacco use of any kind is allowed
• All personal cell phones will be collected at intake. After the intake and processing period of 2 weeks, a Refuge of Light prepaid cell phone will be issued when the resident starts a job or school and is fully participating in the program. Cell phone usage will be allowed on a limited basis and will be restricted during curfew hours or during programming times. NO CELL PHONE OR COMPUTER WILL EVER BE PERMITTED IN A RESIDENT’S ROOM AT ANY TIME.

• Laundry Detergent, Toilet Paper, Paper Goods, Paper Towels – are always needed!
• Incentives for the girls such as gift cards from local retailers/restaurants ($20 or less)

Refuge of Light offers two separate mentoring programs for girls and boys each week called ‘Brave Girl’ and ‘Brave Heart’. These high-risk girls and boys are in need of the love of Christ, Biblical truth and activities that encourage and draw them to a loving Father.  

What we do…

Our non-residential mentoring programs involve working with high-risk girls and boys who have experienced the disruption of removal from their homes or who are experiencing the trauma of sexual, mental and/or physical abuse. Refuge of Light sees the importance of identifying potential trafficking victims, with the largest number of trafficking victims falling into this demographic; kids who live on the fringes and come from dysfunctional homes.

Program Highlights:

• Help instill positive virtues
• Promote identity and self awareness
• Learn to recognize abusive vs healthy relationships
• Teach healthy coping methods
• Important anti-trafficking education
• Dangers of pornography and social media

Our Brave Girl and Brave Heart programs also includes weekly life skills classes, extra-curricular activities and jigsaw puzzles and games. The classes focus on encouragement and instilling personal value and worth. Food is a very important way to nurture these young lives, so a shared meal or light snack is provided at every meeting. Bible studies and shared testimonies are offered and integrated into the courses, as well.
